Masters Cup

and

Challenger Cup

Sunday, January 29th 2017 at 2 pm

These chess tournaments will serve as the climax of a long year of great challenge matches and thrilling events. The Masters Cup will feature the top 8 players on the ladder in an epic clash to finish the year at #1. This is a unique chess tournament with a different format than the rest of the L.A. Chess Ladder tournaments. The challenger cup will be a standard Swiss chess tournament featuring players outside the top 8. Read below for all the details!

WhoThese chess tournaments are open to all L.A. Chess Ladder Members. Membership is free and open to anyone, so send an email to Darren to join the L.A. Chess Ladder. The top 8 entries will play in the Masters Cup. Players who don’t qualify for the Masters Cup will compete in the Challenger cup.

What: Both chess tournaments will use G15 time control with a five second delay. Masters CupThe 8 players will be split into two groups which will play a round robin. The top two players from each group will move on to the semifinals. The final round is 2 out of 3 games and will determine the #1 player on the ladder. The losers in the semifinals will compete for #3. The losers from the round robin will compete for #5 through #8. In the end, the 8 competitors will be the new top 8 on the ladder. In total, everyone will play 6-7 games of chess. Challenger Cup: Standard Swiss chess tournament with 5-7 rounds of chess depending on the number of players.

*If someone from the top 8 does not play the Masters Cup, he/she will be bumped outside the top 8 after the tournament. This is done in an effort to make sure players at the top of the latter stay active. If this happens to you, don’t worry. You can always challenge your way back up.

Checkmate Tournament

Saturday, August 29th 2015 at noon

Chess is a lot like Capture the Flag. Eliminating the opponent’s army is important, but the ultimate goal to win the ultimate prize (the flag or king). Tactical advantage and a sound position mean nothing if your opponent can checkmate you. A quick checkmate can be incredibly satisfying for the winner and a painful embarrassment for the loser (just ask some of Grey Massey’s opponents). So come show off your mating skills at our next exciting tournament. Everything you need to know is written below. If you have any questions, please contact Darren at lachessladder@yahoo.com.

The 2nd Annual

L.A. Chess Ladder Masters Cup

and

Challenger Cup

Sunday, January 25th 2015

These chess tournaments will serve as the climax of a long year of great challenge matches and thrilling events. The Masters Cup will feature the top 8 players on the ladder in an epic clash to finish the year at #1. This is a unique chess tournament with a different format than the rest of the L.A. Chess Ladder tournaments. The challenger cup will be a standard Swiss chess tournament featuring players outside the top 8. Read below for all the details!

WhoThese chess tournaments are open to L.A. Chess Ladder Members only. The top 8 players as of December 31st qualify for the Masters Cup. If someone from the top 8 cannot play, the next highest ranked player will be offered a spot in the Masters Cup. Players who don’t qualify for the Masters Cup may compete in the Challenger cup.

What: Both chess tournaments will use G10 time control with a five second delay. Challenger Cup: Standard Swiss chess tournament with 4-6 rounds of chess depending on the number of players.

*If someone from the top 8 does not play the Masters Cup, he/she will be bumped outside the top 8 after the tournament. If that happens to you, don’t worry. You can always challenge your way back up.

Where/WhenThe Masters Cup will be played on Sunday, January 25th at 1 pm. The location will be at the Sherman Oaks home of ladder player, Grey Massey (address will be given later).
