The 4th Annual

L.A. Chess Ladder

Masters Cup

and

Challenger Cup

Saturday, January 6th 2018 at 2 pm (Standard)

Sunday, January 14th 2018 at 2 pm (Blitz)

These chess tournaments will serve as the climax of a long year of great challenge matches and thrilling events. The Masters Cup will feature the top 8 players on the ladder in an epic clash to finish the year at #1. This is a unique chess tournament with a different format than the rest of the L.A. Chess Ladder tournaments. The challenger cup, played simultaneously, will be a standard Swiss chess tournament featuring players outside the top 8. A similar Masters Cup / Challenger Cup will take place the following weekend for the blitz ladder. You are welcome to play one or both weekends. Read below for all the details!

Who: These chess tournaments are open to all L.A. Chess Ladder Members. Membership is free and open to anyone, so send an email to Darren to join the L.A. Chess Ladder. The top 8 entries will play in the Masters Cup. Players who don’t qualify for the Masters Cup will compete in the Challenger cup.

What: The time control for the standard event will be G15 with a five second delay. The blitz event, the following weekend, will be G5 with a 5 second delay. Masters Cup: the 8 players will be split into two groups which will play a round robin. The top two players from each group will move on to the semifinals. The final round is 2 out of 3 games and will determine the #1 player on the ladder. The losers in the semifinals will compete for #3. The losers from the round robin will compete for #5 through #8. In the end, the 8 competitors will be the new top 8 on the ladder. In total, everyone will play 5 games of chess. Challenger Cup: a standard Swiss chess tournament with 4-6 rounds of chess depending on the number of players.

*If someone from the top 8 does not play the Masters Cup, he/she will be bumped outside the top 8 after the tournament. This is done in an effort to make sure players at the top of the latter stay active. If this happens to you, don’t worry. You can always challenge your way back up.

Where/When: The Masters Cup / Challenger Cup for the standard ladder will be played on Saturday, January 6th at 2 pm. The location will be Juicy Wings located at 6340 Hollywood Blvd. LA, CA 90028. The Masters Cup / Challenger Cup for the blitz ladder will be at the same location on January 14th at 2 pm.
